This study provided empirical information on how ICE Institute as a digital marketplace system and its online courses collections can redesign itself to provide students with a positive and meaningful experience. Indonesia Cyber Education Institute is a newly launched digital marketplace for online courses in Indonesia. It carries the functions of curating, verifying, and registering online courses, managing the gallery, researching, and innovating online learning, partnership, and credentials, and linking to the job market. At present, it has a network of 13 higher education institutions, one professional association, and EdX Consortium to collect 1546 online courses serving 3319 students.
As a new system, ICE Institute needs to document its users' experience as they interact with its system and its online courses collections. Users are to come to the ICE Institute system to take online courses with full expectations for positive experiences. As such, it is necessary for ICE Institute to provide a baseline of good experience as a differentiator and as the expected minimum quality of the ICE Institute system. Various studies show that users are likely to leave the digital system/products if they find difficulties or troubles or run into a usability problem.
User experience, according to Feng & Wei (2019) is a concept that includes all aspects of how individuals interact with a digital product, and it is highly context-dependent and dynamic. Roto, et al. (2011)2 asserts that User Experience (UX) research focusing on the emotional and experiential aspects of system usage is highly recognized relevance for evaluating the user's experience. UX research explores the relationships between usability, symbolic, and aesthetic value for user experience with products (Feng & Wei, 2019).
This study evaluates the experience of higher education students in Indonesia as users of the ICE
Institute system and its online courses collections. Specifically, it will look at how students value their emotional and experiential aspects of their online experience. Data for this study is collected using AttrakDiff questionnaire that has been translated into Bahasa Indonesia. The AttrakDiff is a method developed by Hassenzahl et al to assess the perceived pragmatic quality, the hedonic quality, and the attractiveness of the interactive digital product. Feng and Wei (2019) state that the AttrakDiff questionnaire is a well-established UX evaluation method and can be applied to a wide range of digital products; and also, in the context of users’ initial encounters with the digital product, as well as to evaluate the users’ interaction with the digital product.
The AttrakDiff questionnaire consists of four parts to tap the attractiveness, hedonic quality-identification, hedonic quality-stimulation, dan pragmatic quality of the student's experience. Each part measures the attributes utilizing the bipolar semantic differential 7-scale method that represent opposites (bad-good). The AttrakDiff questionnaire is distributed for a one-shot survey to 30% of ICE Institute's users and 30% of SPADA Indonesia users participating in this study. Users of SPADA Indonesia – another online courses aggregator that was established in 2014 for the purpose of provision of online resources to implement blended learning in Indonesia – are also surveyed to provide a comparative perspective. Quantitative analysis is employed to analyze data collected in this study, especially to identify differences in emotional and experiential aspects of students' experience, both the ICE Institute students and the SPADA Indonesia students. Further analysis will be employed to identify the most influential factor in students' online courses experience. The results of this study provide empirical information on how ICE Institute as a digital marketplace system and its online courses collections can redesign itself to provide students with a positive and meaningful experience.
